Neal Carter: The DriveCam data is a great way to find some information about a case very efficiently. If we have this DriveCam data we can get to a point where we’re telling a client something relevant to a case in, terms of speed and severity, a lot quicker. The presence of DriveCams in vehicles that aren’t even ‘fleet’ is rising. So, that’s just another piece of information that we’re going to be provided with. It’s equipped with two cameras, one forward-facing and one rear-facing. And, the cameras are recording continuously in a loop. This system ends up throwing away most of that data and what it uses to decide if it’s going to keep or throw away that data is an accelerometer. So, anytime we had one of these cameras, we wanted to see, “Okay, can we use the data from the accelerometer to get things like the speed of the vehicle and also to get things like the severity of the impact; the Delta-V of the impact.” And, we started out just doing simple brake tests and then, we also ran a series of four crash tests. In those crash tests, both the impacting vehicle and the impacted vehicle were equipped with DriveCams and we analyzed the speed of the vehicles at impact and also the severity or Delta-V of the impact. And we found that if we just took the data at face value it came pretty close, but we could analyze the data in a way that it actually was very accurate. Maybe there are–the facts of the case are very sparse and there’s no physical evidence documented by the police or anything like that. DriveCam is now the only piece of information we have. And so, then we went through the troubles of validating the information DriveCam provides us so we can use it in our reconstruction.
